Grey College has been presented with the unique opportunity to present French as a Second Additional Language. It was introduced as an extra subject, to be taught after hours, at the start of 2018. Learners who are interested in taking French should realise that it will require a lot of additional work after hours. This subject can only be registered at the beginning of a grade 10 academic year.

FRENCH

French is one of the Romance languages, descending from Latin. Other Romance languages include Italian and the Celtic languages. French can boast 150 million native speakers, but the language is spoken by a total number of 274 million people worldwide. French is the official language in 29 countries, including France (of course), Belgium, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Canada, the Comoros, Ivory Coast, the DRC, Gabon, Haiti, Luxembourg, Madagascar, Monaco, Mauritius, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Switzerland and the Seychelles. French is also an administrative language in countries such as Algeria, Cambodia, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia and Vietnam.

French is the fourth-most widely spoken mother tongue in the European Union. French is also the second most taught foreign language in the EU. According to demographic projections the total French speakers will number approximately 500 million people by 2025. French has a long history as an international language of literature and science and is a primary or secondary language of many international organisations, including the United Nations, the EU, the IOC, NATO and the International Red Cross.

Learners are not only introduced to a new language – they are also exposed to a whole new world and culture. Learners who continue with French from Grade 10 are also afforded the opportunity to travel to France as exchange students or sportsmen.

Grey is one if the few schools in South Africa offering French as a language, providing our boys with an opportunity to take an international language as a Second Additional Language. If a learner takes French until Grade 12, he will be able to speak, write and read French. Learners will write examinations prepared by the IEB (Independent Examination Board).
