Wiskunde & Wiskunde Geletterdheid | Mathematics & Mathematical Literacy

Wiskunde (van die Grieks, “kennis, studie, leer”) is ‘n studie van onderwerpe soos hoeveelheid (getalle), struktuur, ruimte en verandering. Daar is baie verskillende opinies onder wiskundiges en filosowe oor presies wat Wiskunde behels.

Wiskundiges ondersoek spesifieke patrone en gebruik dit om nuwe stellings te formuleer. Wiskundiges bevestig die waarheid of valsheid van stellings deur wiskundige bewyse.

WISKUNDE​

Wiskunde (of Kern Wiskunde) is ‘n intellektuele vakdissipline. Dit is ‘n uitdagende vak wat heelwat insig verg. Wiskunde is ‘n kritiese vak vir ‘n wye verskeidenheid loopbane, wat insluit:

  • Alle ingenieurswese-rigtings
  • Mediese rigtings
  • Wiskundige wetenskappe
  • Inligtingstegnologie
  • Statistiek
  • Aktuariële wetenskap
  • Geoktrooieerde rekenmeester (CA)
  • Ander Finansiële rigtings
  • Bio-wiskunde
  • Rekenaarwetenskap
  • Operasionele navorsing

Met Wiskunde as vak is daar bykans geen beperking op enige loopbaanmoontlikheid nie.

WISKUNDE GELETTERDHEID​

Wiskundige Geletterdheid rus leerders toe met ‘n gewaarwording en basiese kennis van die rol wat Wiskunde in die moderne samelewing speel. Wiskundige Geletterdheid word in ‘n groot mate gedryf deur praktiese wiskundige toepassings. Dit stel leerders in staat om die vermoë te ontwikkel om numeriese denkwyses aan te leer sodat alledaagse situasies krities en analities ontleed kan word sodat gepaste oplossings gevind kan word.

Suid-Afrika kom uit ‘n verlede waar relatief swak gehalte onderwys vir ‘n groot gedeelte van die bevolking aanleiding gegee het tot lae vlakke van geletterdheid en numeriese vaardighede, veral onder die volwasse bevolking. Verskeie internasionale studies toon dat Suid-Afrikaanse leerders baie swak presteer in numeriese vaardigheidstoetse, veral indien dit vergelyk word met ander ontwikkelende en ontwikkelde lande. Leerders wat sukkel met Wiskunde staak in groot getalle die vak, wat lei tot ‘n verdere verswakking in numeriese vaardighede.

Die daarstelling van Wiskundige Geletterdheid as ‘n opsie in die GET-band bied dus ‘n uitkoms aan sulke leerders om ook hul numeriese vaardighede te verbeter. In die aanbied en leer van Wiskundige Geletterdheid word leerders voorsien van die geleenthede om om te gaan met probleme wat hulle sal konfronteer in die werklikheid, wat hulle in staat sal stel om hul basiese wiskundige vaardighede op die proef te stel. Wiskundige Geletterdheid bied aan hulle die geleentheid om basiese terminologie te verstaan. Dit stel hulle bloot aan basiese wiskundige inligting, soos vervat in tabelle, grafieke, diagramme en teks. Dit stel leerders in staat om alledaagse probleme krities te ontleed en om kreatiewe oplossings daarvoor te vind.

Praktiese finansiële probleme waarmee jongmense gekonfronteer word, sluit in huurkooptransaksies, verbandlenings, beleggings (en opbrengste) en so meer. Daar is ook ander praktiese elemente in die vak, soos die lees van kaarte, die volg van roosters, die skatting en berekening van areas en volumes en ‘n basiese kennis van straatplanne en huisplanne.

Mathematics (from Greek, “knowledge, study, learning”) is the study of topics such as quantity (numbers), structure, space, and change. There is a range of views among mathematicians and philosophers as to the exact scope and definition of mathematics.

Mathematicians seek out patterns and use them to formulate new conjectures. Mathematicians resolve the truth or falsity of conjectures by mathematical proof.

MATHEMATICS​

Mathematics (or Core Mathematics) is an intellectual discipline. It is a challenging subject requiring considerable insight. Mathematics is a critical subject for a vast number or possible careers, including:

  • Actuarial Science
  • Chartered Accountant (CA)
  • Finance fields
  • Biomathematics
  • Computer Sciences

With Mathematics as a subject, there are almost no limitations to career choices.

MATHEMATICAL LITERACY​

Mathematical Literacy provides learners with an awareness and understanding of the role that Mathematics plays in the modern world. Mathematical Literacy is a subject driven by life-related applications of mathematics. It enables learners to develop the ability and confidence to think numerically and spatially in order to interpret and critically analyse everyday situations and to solve problems.

South Africa has come from a past in which poor quality or lack of education resulted in very low levels of literacy and numeracy in our adult population. International studies have shown that South African learners fare very poorly in Mathematical Literacy tests in comparison to counterparts in other developed and developing countries. Learners who could not do well mathematically in General Education and Training usually stopped studying Mathematics, thus contributing to a perpetuation of high levels of innumeracy.

The inclusion of Mathematical Literacy as a fundamental subject in the Further Education and Training (FET) curriculum will ensure that our citizens of the future are highly numerate consumers of Mathematics. In the teaching and learning of Mathematical Literacy, learners will be provided with opportunities to engage with real-life problems in different contexts, and so to consolidate and extend basic mathematical skills. Thus, Mathematical Literacy will result in the ability to understand mathematical terminology and to make sense of numerical and spatial information communicated in tables, graphs, diagrams and texts. Furthermore, Mathematical Literacy will develop the use of basic mathematical skills in critically analysing situations and creatively solving everyday problems.

In everyday life, one is continually faced with mathematical demands which the adolescent and adult should be in a position to handle with confidence. These demands frequently relate to financial issues such as hire purchase, mortgage bonds and investments. Other aspects include the ability to read a map, follow timetables, estimate and calculate areas and volumes and understand house plans.
