Fisiese Wetenskap | Physical Science

Physical Science is a branch of natural science that studies non-living and living systems, in contrast to life science. It has many branches, each referred to as a physical science, together called the physical sciences. Branches of Physical Science include Physics, Chemistry, Astronomy and Earth Science. At school the emphasis will mostly be on Physics and Chemistry.

PHYSICAL SCIENCE

The purpose of Physical Science is to make learners aware of their environment and to equip them with investigating skills relating to physical and chemical phenomena. Examples of some of the skills that are relevant to the study of Physical Science is classifying, communicating, measuring, designing an investigation, drawing and evaluating conclusions, formulating models, identifying and controlling variables and problem-solving and reflecting skills.

As stated above, from Grade 10 to Grade 12 the emphasis will mostly be on Physics and Chemistry.

Physics – natural and physical science that involves the study of matter and its motion through space and time, along with related concepts such as energy and force. More broadly, it is the general analysis of nature, conducted in order to understand how the universe functions.

Chemistry – studies the composition, structure, properties and change of matter. In this realm, chemistry deals with such topics as the properties of individual atoms, the manner in which atoms form chemical bonds in the formation of compounds, the interactions of substances through intermolecular forces to give matter its general properties, and the interactions between substances through chemical reactions to form different substances.
