Vakkeuse | Subject Choices

Leerders en ouers word versoek om die volgende in ag te neem wanneer ‘n ingeligte vakkeuse gemaak word:

  • Leerders en ouers moet realisties wees wanneer vakkeuses gemaak word, deur vorige prestasie in die betrokke vak of leerarea in ag te neem.

 

  • Leerders moet besef dat daar van graad 10 tot graad 12 in ‘n groot mate spesialisasie in ‘n betrokke vakgebied plaasvind, met die moontlikheid dat leerders die werk as baie moeiliker kan beskou (veral indien dit vergelyk word met grade 8 en 9).

 

  • Leerders behoort daarop te konsentreer om te mik na ‘n gebalanseerde vaksamestelling, want dit beantwoord aan die vereistes wat gestel word deur die meeste tersiêre kursusse. Daar moet steeds besef word dat ‘n spesifieke loopbaankeuse dalk eers in matriek gemaak sal word.

 

Wiskunde is ‘n voorvereiste vir Fisiese Wetenskap. Indien ‘n leerder dus later besluit om te verander van Wiskunde na Wiskundige Geletterdheid, sal hy ook Fisiese Wetenskap moet verander. Neem ook in ag dat ‘n leerder toegelaat kan word om twee vakke in Graad 10 te verander, maar nie drie nie. Wiskunde word ook sterk aanbeveel vir seuns wat Rekeningkunde wil neem.

Learners and parents are advised to take the following into account in order to make sensible subject choices:

  • Learners and parents should be realistic in making a subject choice. Specifically, previous achievements in the specific learning area must be taken into account.

 

  • Learners must realise that specialisation in a specific learning area will become more pronounced from Grade 10 onwards; the possibility exists that a learner might experience the learning area as more difficult than was the case in Grades 8 and 9.

 

  • Learners should concentrate on maintaining a balanced subject range in order to cover the requirements for most tertiary courses. They should understand that a specific career choice might probably be made only in their matric year.

 

  • Mathematics is a prerequisite for taking Physical Science. Should a learner decide to change from Mathematics to Mathematical Literacy, he would have to discontinue Physical Science as well. It should also be taken into account that a learner will be allowed to change two subjects in Grade 10, but not three. Mathematics is also strongly recommended for boys interested in taking Accounting.

Intellektuele vermoë

‘n Vakkeuse moet realisties wees en dit moet gebaseer wees op werklike prestasie. Dit moet altyd onthou word dat skolastiese prestasie in graad 9 dien as ‘n goeie aanduiding van wat in graad 10 verwag kan word. Dit is (gewoonlik) onwaarskynlik dat ‘n seun se prestasie in die meer senior grade skielik sal verbeter sonder goeie rede (en harde werk).

Aanleg

Aanleg is die potensiaal waaroor ‘n persoon beskik om op ‘n sekere vlak te presteer met ‘n gegewe vlak van opleiding en oefening. Aanleg, saam met belangstelling, gesindheid en motivering bepaal, tot ‘n groot mate, wat die finale sukses in ‘n spesifieke leerarea sal wees.

Graad 9-leerders wat die junior aanlegtoetse aflê, sal normaalweg voorsien word van die uitslag van dié toets, saam met ‘n grafiese voorstelling daarvan, ten opsigte van Tale, Wiskunde, Handelsrigtings, Tegniese rigtings en die Menslike wetenskappe. Dit kan ‘n redelik akkurate aanduiding gee van ‘n seun se aanleg op ‘n sekere gebied.

Belangstelling

‘n Seun moet die vak wat deur hom gekies word geniet en werklik daarin belangstel. Indien dit nie die geval is nie, is dit onwaarskynlik dat hy tot die beste van sy vermoë sal presteer. Dit is wel waar dat belangstelling met verloop van tyd ontwikkel kan word, maar dit sal aktiewe deelname van die betrokke seun verg.

Intellectual ability

Any subject choice must be realistic and should be based on actual achievement. It should be kept in mind that scholastic achievement in Grade 9 will serve as a good indication of what can be expected in Grade 10. It is unlikely that achievement in higher Grades will suddenly improve without good reason and hard work.

Aptitude

This is the potential that a person has to achieve a certain level with a given amount of training and exercise. Aptitude, together with interest, attitude and motivation will decide, to a large extent, the final success in a specific field.

Grade 9 learners who write the junior aptitude test will be provided with the results, as well as a graphic representation, in respect of Languages, Mathematics, Commercial, Technical and Human Sciences. This can provide a fairly accurate indication of aptitude in a specific field.

Interest

The learner must enjoy and show interest in a subject that he chooses. If not, it is highly unlikely that he will achieve to the best of his ability. It is true that interest can be developed over time, but that will require active participation by the learner.

Algemene Opmerkings

  •  Vakveranderings kan slegs deur die loop van die jaar in Grade 10 en 11 gemaak word. Geen vakveranderings word in Graad 12 toegelaat nie. Kyk asseblief na die addisionele inligting in hierdie boekie rakende vakveranderings. Neem in ag dat hierdie inligting onderhewig is aan verandering, afhangende van departementele vereistes.
  • ‘n Vak kan slegs in ‘n betrokke groep aangebied word indien die belangstelling onder die seuns voldoende is. Daar kan die deur die loop van die jaar addisionele klasse geskep word nie.
  • Die vereistes vir universiteitstoelating moet sorgvuldig in ag geneem word by vakkeuses. Hierdie vereistes word ook in hierdie boekie ingesluit.

 All learners must select three of the following subjects (if no extra subjects are intended):

General comments

  •  Subject changes can be made only during the course of the year in Grades 10 and 11. No subject changes will be allowed during Grade 12. Please consult the additional information provided regarding subject choices. Please note that this information is subject to change, depending on departmental regulations.
  • A subject can be offered in a particular group only should a sufficient number of boys be interested in taking the subject. Additional classes for a specific subject cannot be created during a year.
  • The requirements for a university entrance pass must be carefully considered before deciding on subjects. These requirements are also included in this booklet.
