Die 2019 Kapteine van Grey Kollege is | The 2019 Captains of Grey College are:

Vlnr: Ian Small-Smith (Skoolkaptein), Mnr.

During 2018 we continued to include the prefects in the meetings of the academic, sport, cultural and hostel teams of the staff, whilst the school captains attended the School Governing Body meetings whenever they were available. The prefects also formed part of the RCL structure at the school and their contribution at this level of leadership also proved to be invaluable. We trust that the positive aspects of these meetings will have a positive effect on these learners and that one day they will look back and acknowledge that these occasions helped to shape their lives.

Many leadership experts have commented on the research done by Collins (1997) on leadership and, in particular, the sort of leadership that correlates with sustained excellent performance within organizations. In essence, Collins’ approach to leadership is epitomized by his so-called Level 5 leaders who are more interested in personal humility and in building something enduring than feeding their own egos. There is therefore a direct correlation between this approach to leadership and self-organization, in particular. This approach to leadership is based on the philosophy that an organization will prosper even without them at the helm because capability is built and developed in terms of people, in terms of expertise, interms of standards and in terms of imagination. The old maxim attributed to Lao Tzu in terms of this approach to leadership is therefore extremely relevant: “ The best leader says little, but when they speak, people listen and when they are finished with their work, the people say we did it ourselves.”

Grey College also embraced the concept of a Representative Council of Learners (RCL) this year to broaden the identification and development of leaders amongst the boys at school. Through a democratic election process student leaders in every register class, and per grade group, were identified at the beginning of the year. These student leaders then elected an executive council who met twice a term with members of senior management to address certain issues raised by the boys like the appearance of the boys, the dress code, issues at the Tuckshop, to name but a few, in order for the rest of the school to have a voice through the RCL in certain operational issues. Members of the school’s prefect body also formed part of the executive council. The RCL also received training by the Free State Department of Education and had the opportunity to liaise with other RCL members during this occasion. The following boys formed part of the 2018 executive council: Ian Small-Smith (President); Daniel Williams (Deputy President); Sikhanyiso Nkosi(Secretary); Kanenelo Raletooane(Deputy Secretary); Nathan Raath(Treasurer) and Mzimkhulu Jita(PRO).
