Direkteur van Krieket | Director of Cricket

Under the directorship of Mr. Adri Swanepoel, cricket at Grey College has continued to develop new programmes and strategies, in an effort to fine-tune the remarkable cricketing talent at the school during 2018. Through a high performance programme for cricket which started in May and which ran throughout the year, four age group squads were identified and started with the winter skills development programme. Technical analyses of all these cricketers were conducted at the start of the first intake and this information is kept on a central database for future reference, as well as for error correction procedures. The programme also includes specific strength and conditioning programmes in the gymnasium.

Four new coaching consultants have been used since September this year. Ryan McLaren, Pite van Biljon, Dillon du Preez and Werner Coetsee will assist our coaches in the afternoons and bring more expertise to the game. All four of these players are currently playing or have played for the Knights in franchise cricket.

We are most excited about the development of an indoor cricket facility and find ourselves in the final planning phase. The number of boys playing cricket at Grey College have grown over the last few years and this facility has now become essential to maximize the potential of these players and expose them to the best skills and training techniques. We see players from various parts of the country enrolling at Grey College specifically for the cricket programme we are running. We should therefore offer them the best facilities to improve and be successful. The indoor facility will consist of eight cricket nets which will be equipped with a special Oval carpet. Silica sand will be used to control the speed off the surface and this will make it possible to do better skills training drills and refine team game plans.

There are eight practice strips available and all of these are prepared and used on a rotational basis. Our plans are to build another four pitches next to these. There is also space for three artificial nets which can be used for skills drills while the teams are preparing on turf. There is an urgent need for us to lift the cricket square at the Main Oval by about 100 mm and re-plant the pitches. We have acquired the necessary funding for this project. It has been decided that the whole square at the Main Oval be taken out and replaced during the week after the Past vs Present matches.

Our Grey College teams started using the new turf (grass) nets during the afternoon sessions this year and it has already proved to have made a difference in preparation of matches.

The Grey College First XI participated in a new T20 competition hosted by Waterkloof, Centurion and Menlo Park in September and ended fourth out of sixteen of the best cricket schools in the country. The timing of this festival was perfect in that it will assist our team with preparation and also afford players the opportunity to play more T20 cricket. The number of inter schools’ fixtures keep growing and we now play against 12 of the best cricketing schools in the country on a regular basis. It has helped create depth in the various age group teams with the U14A team now ranked 6th and the U15A side ranked 5th on the school sports index.
